Konecranes-konsernin historia ulottuu vuoteen 1910, jolloin perustettiin sähkömoottoreiden korjaamiseen erikoistunut KONE Oy. Konecranes kuului KONE-konserniin 15.4.1994 asti, jolloin KONE myi osana rakenneuudistustaan kaikki hissitoimintaan kuulumattomat toimintonsa. Nosturiliiketoiminta myytiin institutionaaliselle sijoittajaryhmälle (ruotsalainen Industri Kapital) ja nosturidivisioonan ylimmälle johdolle.
Konecranes Oyj:n osakkeet ovat olleet listattuna NASDAQ OMX Helsinki -pörssissä vuodesta 1996 lähtien. Konecranesin kasvu on ollut pääasiassa orgaanista, mutta myös yritysostot ovat olleet olennainen osa menestyksellistä kasvutarinaa.
